The
Kiwanis Club of
Colorado Springs
is the oldest club in the Pikes Peak area. It was organized on
December 22, 1920, with 116 charter members. It is one of nine
clubs in Division Four of the Rocky Mountain District.
The
Kiwanis Club of Colorado Springs is currently in its 85th
year. The club, through the generosity of its members, has
established its own charitable foundation. The Colorado
Springs Kiwanis
Foundation is dedicated to supporting local organizations
selected by the foundation board. The following section
outlines the organization and purpose of the foundation.
The
Colorado Springs Kiwanis Foundation
The Beginning:
On November 11, 1954, Armin Barney, Harry D. MacDonald,
and Bill Marker signed the certificate of incorporation which
established the Colorado Springs Kiwanis Foundation. Together
with R. J. Shetler and Roy Foard, they were the first trustees
of the foundation.
The Purpose:
Article II of the certificate of incorporation states
the purpose of the corporation was to "most effectively
assist, encourage, and promote the general well being of the
human race; provided however, that the corporation shall never
have or exercise any objects or purposes, except such as shall
in law be deemed charitable." From its inception, the
foundation served as a vehicle for tax deductible gifts for
the good of the human race.
The first funds received by the foundation was a
contribution of $450 from a Kiwanis-sponsored fireworks
display. Soon after, a grant of $430 was made on behalf of the
foundation to the local YMCA to construct a boat dock at the
"Y" camp.
At a special meeting in 1955, it became policy to
establish a permanent fund, which was allowed to grow until
such times as the income from the fund would be used to meet
the original goals of the foundation. Members of the club, and
other interested persons shall be encouraged to make
contributions to the foundation until said fund reaches a
sizeable amount.
The immediate past president, president, first vice
president, and five elected trustees serve as the Board of
Trustees. All members of the Colorado Springs Kiwanis Club are
automatically members of the foundation.
The Present:
The Board of Trustees is empowered to receive all
contributions, oversee their proper investment, and approve
all payments. No Kiwanian may have any interest in the assets
of the foundation, nor may any share in any distribution
thereof. The trustees meet quarterly, and any Kiwanian is
welcome to attend these meetings.
The Future:
The Foundation is expected to continue to grow, with the
help of the generous members of this Kiwanis Club. Ways you
can help this fund grow, and thus help the organizations that
Kiwanis supports, are:
• Donations of funds, securities, or other property.
• Place a reasonable bequest
in your will.
• A contribution each
quarter, along with your monthly dues.
• A donation in memory of a
friend or relative.
Since only the interest or dividend income is
distributed each year, your gifts and donations will help keep
the principal growing.
"The good we have done and will continue to do
cannot be completely or adequately shown on our financial
statements. The greater good is in the enriched lives of our
elderly and in stimulation of greater achievements of our
youth. It is a record that makes being a Kiwanian
worthwhile."
